Statement of Intent: (describe the main
ideas, concepts, topics and/or themes that you intend to explore in relation
to your chosen brief)
Photographic journey; traditional & digital, but
what is the reality?
A journey from
traditional to modern photographic advertising on how women are perceived,
and its effects on what real women think of themselves. Why has it changed?
I want to investigate into the emotions and feelings of a group of young
women and how they feel when they have their photograph taken, and what
drives them to want to look better. If that is the case.
Where does truth in a photograph begin? Why do
photographers or specialist editors change their imagery and what are their
reasons behind it, as this style of advertising has grown to create the
“perfect women” it makes “real women” feel less attractive.
I intend to go on a photographic journey and seek the truth behind on why
photographers and editors feel they need to airbrush models for public eye.
Traditional Photographers would not have access to such editing techniques
and tools, so portraying women through advertising once would have had to be
a true image of a real woman and less of a “Doll like” woman. But; rather
than using digital quick fix tools to manipulate an image, traditional
photographers would physically have to adjust lighting or use of make up to
capture the perfect photograph.
I will produce many photographs which I will show the stages from the initial
index image through to the final edited versions, using
myself/people/portraiture as my main source, experimenting with various types
of camera, lighting, filters, flashes, computer editing.
My personal view on this is that media and advertising plays a massive part
on how women think they should look. Photographs are being overly edited
portraying what is not a real image. Most importantly through this project I
will be documenting how each woman feels when I take their photograph,

Methods, Materials and Processes: (describe what
materials, methods and processes you intend to use)
Having devised a time plan, tasks throughout this project should be
taken step by step to make it easier for myself to plan and prepare.
Experimenting
with different types of cameras to produce various outcomes to images. I will
purchase a box camera. I will explore the box camera and its simplicity
and creation of real photographs, capturing “in the moment” stills, and
create my own bulk of photographs using this type of camera, as well as using
modern equipment to take the same photographs of the same subject.
I will be providing a lot of questionnaires to hand to each model I use
within this project, picking specific questions about their thoughts and
feelings on the photo shoot they have just had with myself.

Proposed Research: (give examples of appropriate
research, including examples of artists/designers and practical
experimentation, that you intend to undertake)
My research will include exploration of
traditional cameras and techniques whilst advertising using woman as their
subject, in contrast with this, comparing it to modern day photography and
the techniques they use to portray that “perfect” woman image.
I also intend to do a lot of research into a group of young woman’s thoughts
and feelings towards todays advertising strategies using woman and how it
makes them feel.
I will also be contacting all of the photographers I know, and will be
discussing their techniques in their photographic style, along with providing
them with a small questionnaire about their thoughts on photo editing and
what the purpose of their editing for the image is.
I will of course research Specialist Photo editing artists, Renee Robyn is
one in particular whose work appears very editing, but has strong opinions on
fake imagery manipulating peoples thoughts on what is real and what is not in
photography.
Other sources in my research will include online photographic tutorials,
magazines, books, advertising.
Each subcategory will be designated a specific number of weeks on each one.
To save getting muddled up and remain in control.
