Make up test shoot with myself

it took alot of guts for me to do this!

but i carried out the same experiment on the models previously on myself, taken WITH the flash on, rather than natural light.

These were the results, one with no make up has not been edited at all, the other two with make up have been edited through adobe lightroom.

There is no way in hell, i would publicly post a photo of me with out any make up on, on a social networking site.

Alot of people take Selfies, with them at their best. and not their worst.

portraying in a certain sense a fake online presence.

NOT EVERYTHING IS SO SUGAR COATED

Research - self image, manipulation of women and make up

Shelby created this artistic experiment exploring self image and beauty in society, commercial media has a huge impact on women and how they look and feel about themselves.

This inspired me to try my own experiment,

I wanted to shoot some women generally of the same age group as myself, young women, and photograph them without any make up, with make up and more make up than they would normally wear, also providing a small questionnaire for them to fill out generally about make up and when they wear it and how they feel when they wear it.

Shoot 1. RESULTS

How do you feel when you wear make up?
More confident, more attractive

What is your opinion on people who wear far too much make up?Looks like they are hiding behind a mask, doesn't look good.

Do you think the media plays a big part in changing the way women look or think of themselves? and how?Yes, they always portray perfect women with perfect hair and make up, puts a lot of pressure on normal women.

Shoot 2. RESULTS

How do you feel when you wear make up?
I feel alive and wonderful.

What is your opinion on people who wear far too much make up?its their face they can do what they want with it.

Do you think the media plays a big part in changing the way women look or feel about themselves? and how?Yes, every girl wants to look pretty. We see it all over the TV and magazines, its been like this for years and is not going to stop now.

Shoot 3. RESULTS

How do you feel when you wear make up?I feel alot more confident

What is your opinion on people who wear far too much make up?Dont really have an opinion on it, if they feel happier with it caked on, go them!

Do you think that the media plays a big part in changing the way women look or think of themselves? and how?Yes, as i think there is alot of pressure for people to look a certain way, with different fashions etc.

NEXT EXPERIMENT: THE SELFIE

Personal Learning Plan for Emporers new clothes

Statement of Intent: (describe the main ideas, concepts, topics and/or themes that you intend to explore in relation to your chosen brief)
I intent to create an interior set of photographs; or photograph in conjunction with the Story of The Emperor’s new clothes, within this Story I have picked up on the aspect of Self Image, the Emperor changes his clothes all the time and cares about what he looks like, and appears to comes across as Vain, when there is no need for him to buy as many clothes as he does. Using Self Image as a sub theme, I wish to look at modern day women and how their need for make-up is becoming more strong, influenced by media and celebrity status, real women feel under pressure to look good. Alongside this; the new phenomena of the “Selfie” can comes across as very vain in some people eyes, the Selfie is where people like to take pointless photos of themselves, showing them at their best or simply sharing a snapshot of their life, which in reality I think no one really cares about, Facebook shows a great example of this, where people I know will update their profile picture regularly or upload lots of photographs of themselves, and I sit and wonder why? This I feel is another link to the Emperor’s new clothes, his addiction for new clothes and self indulgence, which these days too many people share these attributes; especially the younger generation.

Using photography I plan to experiment with portraiture, using young women as a basis, I want to photograph them at their worst and their best, I want to also gain knowledge of why they wear make-up, so I intend to have discussions with them about this. I’m also planning a selfie experiment, I will ask 5 women and 5 men to take part over the space of a week, to take selfies as they would normally do, and I am using this as research to see what various types of selfie I receive back. As an end result for final piece manufacture, I may use myself as the main subject, as theme generally is “The selfie Addiction”.

Methods, Materials and Processes: (describe what materials, methods and processes you intend to use)
Having devised a time plan, tasks throughout this project should be taken step by step to make it easier for myself to plan and prepare. I plan on using my camera a lot to produce certain types of images and maybe use some image manipulation or added text into the images.
A lot of my project will have to be done outside of college hours, taking the photographs will be done outside of college, and will have to find models willing to take part in the project if human imagery is my chosen outcome. I will also be using myself as an experiment throughout the project, this fits in well as it is a Selfie project.
Incubation of ideas will certainly appear, and time management will be put into practice.
Experiments will be made using figures, facial expressions, as well experimenting with makeup or face paint to create a different style of selfie, each image I want to be unique in its own way. Clarification of which ideas works best will be decided upon after continuous evaluative comments, and coming to a appropriate conclusion to suit the theme.
Proposed Research: (give examples of appropriate research, including examples of artists/designers and practical experimentation, that you intend to undertake)
My research will be compiled with the story itself, alongside with discussions with young women about their makeup and selfie habits. As I stated above I will be conducting a selfie experiement, to gain knowledge of the types of selfies that are more common than others; this will last a week. This timescale will show just how many selfies are produced in such a small time, showing how addictive it can be, and also pointless.

My other research will include image manipulation, and how easily images can be changed to make them look better, or even worse.
I will look into photographers with use the selfie for a purpose or in a creative way.
Where did the Selfie start? And were they always done through using photography?

Expected Outcomes: (describe the main outcomes that you intend to produce, including key milestones)
- to produce a thorough PLP in which to boost my ideas and concepts producing appropriate research alongside.
- develop concepts, materials and ideas through chosen media and methods to which are suited to me.
- resolve any issues came across whilst in development stage of concepts
- evaluate solutions and make comment about future practice, what I could have done better? If I could change something what would it be?
- prepare the final piece to a professional standard, and add this to my portfolio of best work.
- Keeping blog posts up to date, showing journey of project at various stages.

7 deadly sins

As part of this project i am looking into the 7 deadly sins, so i have researched their meanings in which to help me understand each one, it has inspired me to create a series of photographs, i have attached a photo of inspiration in which i will work towards.

Time plan

Creativity needs a realistic time plan, i have devised one to help guide me through this project, whether i stick to it is a different question! Time management is a key factor. Evidently the project has to be completed by week beginning 6th January 2014

Mind Map

As a starting point, after reading the story, i created this mind map, this is to kickstart my thoughts and help prepare me to write my PLP.

New brief!

Ok, so we have been issued a new brief, i will try keep my blog updates regular this time!

"The Emporers new clothes"

This brief has been used for several years by the college, it would be cool to see some of the other students work from these previous years,
Above is the brief itself , which is fairly open as to which media you prefer to use. I have highlighed mediums which interest me.

initial hand drawings

As i stated before , i do quite like the idea of writing words onto hands, words including - hope, love , compassion, respect etc

it wasn't really inspiring me enough
, so i began to think of what else i could possibly do with hands.

I came across this image , and thought it could be interesting to create my own letters using my own hands to create the words stated above.

Ideas started to bounce about in my head, and now was thinking along the lines of image manipulation and creating stencils with the hand images, so at first glance they may not appear so as hands......

Lastest brief - world AIDS day art competition

Newest brief - subject - HIV, Alive and Well

we have been approached to create a artwork within this subject, portraying a positive image. As the virus can be tackled more openly in modern days, more people are living and leading normal every day lives.

Research - what the virus is and what it can do the human body and mind, possibly online blogs from real people with the virus asking advice or sharing general
stories on how they cope with things, and it interests me to start a facebook discussion with people my own age to see their opinions on people with the virus. Also investigating into the exhibition space where our artworks can possibly be displayed and get a better understanding of how it could look.

Thoughts/Development - I want to explore the medium of photography, portraits and photographing hands was my initial thought, the idea of combining text with hands , and creating words using hands could make quite interesting imagery, making stencils with the photographs i take first hand, and editing them on photoshop, then onto preparing them to be used with combining light.

Photos of progress will be uploaded soon!

Edinburgh project - slide 8

and last but not least - the final slide!...

edited using photoshop, collaborating the intial photograph of the building I had taken, and inserting the self made light graffiti experiment i made.

Looks good if i dont say so myself!

REALLY PLEASED!

Edinburgh project - slide 7

2nd last slide , represents legal wall graffiti imagery

these can be seen on large area's of fencing and/or walls around the city.

Final slide to go!

Edinburgh project - slide 6

Imitating the Mural type of graffiti art around Edinburgh,

Roseburn mural , was created by children of the surrounding area, to bring back together the community and give them something to be proud of.

Edinburgh project - slide 5

Imitation of legal wall graffiti,

slowly we should start too see a bit of a difference within the graffiti , this being a theme of more community friendly, and more thought out designs of work.

Edinburgh Project - slide 4

Representation of stencil graffiti art ,

not the best as i am using the same
media for every single slide.

A future project into making stencils and spray painting is on my to do list!

Edinburgh project - Slide 3

Slide 3 is to represent vandal graffiti imagery,

notice I am maintaining the same building shape throughout, I created a building stencil to be repeated.

Each drawing will be photographed in the best light possible, depending on how bright they are naturally I may slightly enhance the brightness on photoshop for maximum colour for greater projection results.

Analysis of network maps - 300 words

Linking to the previous post of my life map, we were to link up any similarities between our own maps against our classmates maps -

I felt that looking at others peoples futures, certain people seemed to know exactly what it is they want to do after they finish their degree, where on the other hand me and a few others are still a bit up in the air about what they want as a career but we all share the same hope of gaining a
good grade from our degree. There was a mixture of outlooks such as working and teaching abroad, as well as doing charity work and being a self employed freelance artist.
Looking at my past and previous experience, I have quite a variety of different skills I had put into practice, from photography and graphics, to textiles; sewing and embroidery, fashion illustration, to working in mixed media and painting, printmaking and 3D sculpture workshops. With all these in mind , there were/are certain workshops I prefered more than others, I enjoyed them more and wanted to try more, these being photography, illustration and a bit of textiles. Similarly a lot of people in the group like to try new materials and mix and match what they want to use, trying to gain more skills, and broaden the horizon.
Some other people in the class have had a bit more experience with doing projects outside of college , for example Karen working on a community mural, and Scott holding his own gallery spaces and selling work also creating his own website display recent works, creating my own personal website and beginning to sell my work is something I really need to start doing and begin to advertise myself and get my name out there. I would probably like to be self employed in the future, working from commissions, and selling personal work. even doing a bit of photography on the side
.

Heres hoping it all goes to plan!

paper relief experiments for projection

Starting with just a plain sheet of sugar paper, i outlined the building shape I wanted to use....

I then went on to carefully cut away small sections of the building creating small details , to make it look less solid and more appealing to the eye....

Another layer was then cut out, and placed on top of the other one to create depth when fixed to the wall...

The projector was matched up against the size of the paper, by simply moving the projector forward or backwards to make the image bigger or smaller.....

More experiments using card were made, using layering techniques and paper cutting....

Beginning to establish a curved design, fixed to the wall would look more exciting and would possibly hide all internal mess by fully covering the sides unlike the previous experiment....

MORE TOO COME! =]

1st attempt at light painting!

TCB (Twin Cities Brightest)
Another great picture I came across, this is amazing!.....I will be trying to re-create my own images like these, and experimenting with various types of light to see which ones work best and give the best effect
Taylor Pemberton

For inspiration for my Applied Practice project , research into light painting took place , it really intrigues me , and MAKES me want to go out and try my own.

Graffiti is my theme, and want to incorporate graffiti onto buildings and/or around the city of Edinburgh , without actually doing anything illegal.
